Vietnam, Hoi An 2017

The Story

A woman from Hoi An exhales a puff of smoke into the air with pleasure. Her name is Hanh but people call her Ba Sau, which translates literally into Ms. Six even though she was born fifth in her family. In Vietnam, first-born children are often nicknamed Hai, meaning Second. Ba Sau was an ice-cream vendor in her youth and she still loves making others happy by singing.
